Dartford Crossing tolls to remain the same
25 November 2011

Van insurance customers could be very pleased to learn that the proposed toll rises at the Dartford Crossing have been scrapped for this month and next spring.
Heavy goods vehicles are currently charged £3.70 to use the Dartford-Thurrock Crossing, but proposed toll hikes would have seen the charge rise to £5 later this year and £6 by the spring of 2012.
The Freight Transport Association's head of road network management Malcolm Bingham said the proposed 60 per cent price hike would have been particularly poor given that the bridge was paid off in 2003.
"It was after this point that the toll, which was needed to pay off the bridge's construction, should have been abandoned. Instead it was reinvented as a 'road charge'," he added.
Earlier this month, the Confederation of British Industry suggested that creating a toll road to be used by van insurance customers on the A14 could be a good way to boost the economy.
