Express Insurance's Shane 'Shakey' Byrne is coming home
22 November 2010

2-time BSB champion signs with HM Plant Honda for
2011!
Shane Byrne is 'coming home' to the British Superbike Championship
in 2011 with the express aim of being one of the few riders to take
three BSB titles.
After two years in World Superbikes, the 33-year-old who is
originally from Kent, is joining the championship-winning HM Plant
Honda team for 2011 and he says he wants to add to the British
Superbike titles he won in 2003 and 2008.
The HM Plant Honda team has considerable experience and
pedigree. They took the title in 2006 and 2007 with Ryuichi
Kiyonari and Kiyo made it three BSB titles for them by winning a
closely-fought championship this year.
Shakey says: "Up until Oulton Park this year, Niall Mackenzie
was the most successful BSB rider with three titles, but Kiyo has
equalled that, so it's my aim to join those two on three titles
each. I'm very excited about coming back and delighted to be
joining HM Plant Honda. They're a team I know well from racing
against them in the past and it's a testament to the whole team's
strength that they took first and second in this year's series with
Kiyo and Josh Brookes. I'm looking forward to partnering Kiyo next
season he's a really nice guy and knows the bike well, so that
should help."
Shakey will ride the team's Honda CBR1000RR Fireblades -
machines which have won three BSB titles since 2005. Both of
Shakey's titles came on Italian Ducati V-twin motorcycles, so how
does he feel about moving to the Japanese four-cylinder bike? "I
won a race on a satellite-spec Fireblade in 2007 while riding for
Paul Bird's Stobart Honda squad," says Shakey. "But I really want
to prove to everyone that I can ride and win on a four-cylinder
bike as well as a V-twin. I remember the Fireblade being a really
good all-round bike and in 2011 it will be my first time riding a
real top-specification four-cylinder bike, so I'm looking forward
to it."
Tony Way, Managing Director of Express Insurance says: "We have
sponsored Shakey for 2 seasons now and we're very
pleased to see him coming home. We wish him well for the 2011
season."
