Colin Montgomery to cross the USA on a motorcycle
22 July 2010

Ryder Cup Captain to 'Saddle Up' in the
States
Ever wondered what golfers are thinking about when they take a
swing? Golfing legend Colin Montgomery imagines himself as an Easy
Rider clad in biker's leathers, powering down Route 66 on a Harley
Davidson. This dream may well become a reality, as he has vowed to
ride across America on a motorcycle if the European Ryder Cup team
are victorious in October.
The Scotsman says the trip has been a lifelong dream. While he
doesn't own or even know how to ride a motorcycle yet, he intends
to start learning during his time off the greens in order to
prepare for this adventure.
Before riding on foreign roads - what you need to
know
There are a number of international laws and rules of the road
that must be taken into account when entering a foreign territory
by bike. Familiarise yourself with the driving laws of each country
you visit, taking particular note of the local speed limits.
A provisional license doesn't always entitle the holder to drive
outside the territory that it was issued in. Check whether an
international permit is required, and always service your vehicle
or motorcycle before leaving the UK.
While travelling on foreign roads
The same general rules of the road apply internationally. Always
drive defensively and expect the unexpected. Never drink and
drive. The majority of Western countries have a zero-tolerance
policy for drunk driving. Never drive when you're tired and don't
overload your motorcycle; there should never be more than two
people on your motorcycle at any one time.
Check if your classic motorcycle insurance covers all
your trips on foreign roads before setting out. Whether you're
learning to ride or just dreaming about it on the golf course, why
not get a motorcycle insurance online quote
