Tracker issues winter car-jacking warning

Vehicle recovery specialist Tracker has issued a warning to car insurance customers who are tempted to leave their cars unattended with the keys still in the ignition on winter mornings.

The firm said that so-called 'frost jackings' rise in the winter months as motorists try and de-ice their cars before embarking on their morning commute.

Tracker noted that of all the cars stolen in the UK each year - about one every five minutes - 84 per cent are taken with the owners' keys.

Stuart Chapman, the firm's police relationships manager, said: "Our research shows that thieves are opportunists and look out for cars on frosty mornings, shopping around for the most popular makes and models, as temperatures start to drop."

He claimed that car insurance customers should use their common sense and never leave their car running while unattended.

Motorists were also encouraged to make a number of winter checks before hitting the road in icy conditions by car insurance expert at MoneySupermarket.com Pete Harrison.
