Plug-In Car Grant launched by government
28 July 2010

Transport secretary Phillip Hammond announced the launch of the Plug-In Car Grant which is aimed at giving car insurance customers a helping hand when it comes to switching to greener car varieties.
Drivers in the UK who are considering whether or not to purchase a hydrogen fuel cell car, an all-electric vehicle or a plug-in hybrid car could avail of the grant.
It would see the government contributing as much as £5,000 towards the purchase of the car, as long as it satisfied standards outlined by the Office for Low Emissions Vehicles.
Speaking at the offices of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), Mr Hammond said: "We are sending a clear signal that Britain is open for business and that we are committed to greening our economy. This will ensure that the UK is a world leader in low emission vehicles."
The SMMT welcomed the recent recommendations made by the Committee on Climate Change, which encouraged the government to continue spending on low carbon emission technology.
