Motorists warned about part-worn tyres

TyreSafe has issued a warning to motorists about the dangers of part-worn tyres.

According to the organisation, used tyres can pose a significant threat to motorists and other drives.

As well as the increased danger of having an accident while driving on worn tyres, motorists can face legal action if their tyre tread depth is not up to standard.

Recently, the Ministry of Justice released figures showing that 9,639 people were convicted in England and Wales for driving on dangerous tyres in 2011, but some motorists may be unaware that they are breaking the law.

TyreSafe carried out an investigation with Auto Express magazine into the reliability of part-worn tyres.

After purchasing 50, the firms got an independent expert to take a look. The tyre specialist found that 98 per cent of them did not meet legal requirements and more than a third were found to contain potentially dangerous amounts of damage.

Stuart Jackson, chairman at TyreSafe, said: "It's impossible to know the history of part worn tyres and the true extent of any damage which may have occurred inside the tyre."
