Many second-hand cars 'an insurance write-off'

Many of the motors that can be purchased from second-hand dealers are considered a car insurance 'total loss' or write-off, it has been revealed.

New figures from HPI have shown four per cent of the vehicles it checked fell under this category as they had damage that may not be immediately obvious to consumers.

While one in 20 of the cars looked at by the group last year had their mileage altered, one in five did not have the correct number plates.

Consumer director for HPI Kristian Welch said people should be able to "shop with confidence", especially at a time when many consumers are on a tight budget.

"It's alarming to see used car buyers are still exposed to danger when looking to invest their hard-earned cash in a new set of wheels," the expert added.

This comes just after British Car Auctions revealed it saw a "significant" increase in the number of cars purchased over the internet in 2011 compared with the previous year.
