Laser scanners 'to cut motorway closure times'

The length of time roads are closed to people with car insurance after accidents have occurred is to be cut as new 3D laser technology is to be introduced.

Roads minister Mike Penning said the Department for Transport (DfT) has awarded 27 police forces around the country with a share of £2.7 million to finance the use of the new technology.

The technology works by creating a 3D image of the whole crash site, rather than investigators having to painstakingly survey each aspect of the scene.

"Today's £2.7 million DfT funding award will see 3D laser scanners rolled out quickly where they are needed most. This will benefit drivers by reducing incident clear up times by 39 minutes on average," Mr Penning said.

Motorists could be planning to cut down on their journeys during the winter months after the Institute of Advanced Motorists stated that the snow and icy conditions make it very dangerous on the already busy roads.
