IAM urges drivers to check their speed limits

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has advised drivers to manage their speed more carefully in order to boost their own safety and that of other road users and pedestrians.

IAM head of training Simon Elstow said: "Know the speed limit and always abide by it. That doesn't mean you have to drive slowly, but we do all have to stay within the limit."

The organisation advised as part of its ongoing Drive & Survive road safety initiative that those who have difficulty staying within the speed limit should select a gear that makes it easier for them to do so.

Furthermore, motorists should remember that limits are a maximum not recommended speed - in poor conditions it is therefore always prudent to reduce speed.

Meanwhile, road safety charity Brake has revealed car occupants are more than three times as likely to be killed in a serious accident when travelling on rural roads.
