Golf clubs left in cars at risk of theft

Car insurance may not cover golf clubs and mountain bikes being left in car boots, it has been suggested.

Homeowners are leaving sports equipment with a potential value of £770 unsecured in their garages, car and gardens, according to research by Hiscox.

Professionals polled by the home insurer suggested that the use of this equipment during warmer months means that homeowners could be leaving themselves exposed to burglars, without insurance cover available to pick up the loss.

Commenting on the findings, Hiscox home insurance expert Austyn Tusler explained that the value of expensive and sophisticated sports equipment really can add up.

He added: "The research highlights that opportunistic thieves could find they have more than a sporting chance to make off with a treasure trove of expensive sports kit left unsecured.

"It's important that homeowners work out how much it might cost to replace their kit to make sure they are fully covered."

Recent research by Co-operative Financial Services indicated that drivers themselves may be pushing up the cost of car insurance premiums.

Figures from the firm indicate that motor insurance cheats add £1.25 billion to the cost of car insurance premiums every year.
