Driving still a popular pastime, survey shows
7 August 2012

A new survey has shown driving continues to be a popular pastime for people in Britain, with many motorists getting into their vehicle to go for a drive just for fun.
Some 55 per cent of respondents to an AA/Populus poll stated they have gone for a drive without a particular destination in mind, reports the Press Association.
Around a quarter (23 per cent) stated they do this at least once a month, while ten per cent of those who took part in the research do it on a weekly basis.
Those who live in Northern Ireland (72 per cent), Scotland (63 per cent) and the north-east of England (63 per cent) were the most likely individuals to have just gone for a drive, it was noted in the results of the study.
Car insurance is likely to continue to be in high demand as the nation's thirst for driving seems to be no nearer being quenched.
AA president Edmund King said: "Despite cones, congestion, clamping and high costs, drivers' love affair with the car and driving continues."
He added research conducted by the organisation 30 years ago found 80 per cent of motorists describe driving as a pleasure and this is still the case today.
"We hear stories that younger people are more interested in social media than driving but our poll seems to suggest that younger drivers are more likely to drive, just for the sake of it, than other drivers," noted Mr King, who pointed out semi-skilled or unskilled workers were found by the poll to be more likely to go for a drive than those in higher managerial professions.
This comes shortly after the AA launched its summer drink-driving campaign, reminding motorists of the dangers of getting behind the wheel of their vehicle after consuming alcohol.
More than one in three young drivers (35 per cent) responded to research by the body saying they will travel further by car this summer than they did last year.
