Drivers face fewer new car discounts, research shows
31 August 2010

Cheap car insurance may be key to drivers of new cars balancing their finances in the current financial crisis, with new figures revealing that vehicle discounts are becoming more scarce.
Discounts offered on new car purchases have dropped by 12 per cent over the last 12 months, according to What Car?.
Compounding this decline in incentives to buy is the increase in listed prices being introduced by dealers in the UK.
Data indicates that drivers will have less success with haggling than they may have done 12 months ago.
What Car? research indicates that the average amount a driver should be able to haggle off a new car in September is £1,779 - £248 less than in September 2009.
Commenting on the findings, What Car? editor-in-chief Steve Fowler underlined the importance of seeking out the best deals online before going to the forecourt.
He explained: "You might not want to shop online, but sticking a print-out under a car dealer's nose is a sure-fire way to get them to up their own discount."
Recent research by Exchange and Mart indicates that air conditioning is the most desirable in-built car add-on, suggesting that drivers may spend more money on this item if it were offered.
