Chancellor 'should have cut fuel duty'

The chancellor should have taken the opportunity to cut fuel duty in his Autumn Statement yesterday (November 29th) rather than cancelling proposed increases, according to the Association of Car Fleet Operators (ACFO) chairman Julie Jenner.

Ms Jenner said successive governments have "severely under invested" in the nation's road network despite collecting more than £40 billion a year in motoring-related taxes and it still expects car insurance customers to pay extra fuel duty in August 2012.

The ACFO chairman added while the organisation is pleased the chancellor won't press ahead with the January increase, fleets, business drivers and car insurance policyholders are no better off.

"Fuel prices remain extremely high so it would have been more helpful if he had relieved pressure on business and private fuel budgets by cutting duty," she added.

Chief executive officer of the Freight Transport Association Theo de Pencier said the increased fuel duty would have meant an additional £325 million a year in costs to the haulage industry.
