Women bikers not keen on pink, says expert

Female motorcycle insurance customers are not hung up on pink and feminised gear, is has been pointed out.

Motor expert CAP has warned that dealers trying to lure female riders through customised gear targeted at women may actually be alienating them.

The news is especially worrying as 2010 has seen new bike sales drop by seven per cent.

Alan Elsworth, editor of CAP Green Book, said: "The advice is, don't tar women with a pink brush and instead realise that if women are better understood a still largely untapped market is probably there for the taking."

He also pointed out that bike dealerships run by a husband and wife duo are more successful than others because they are able to connect better with female customers.

At present, female riders account for ten to 15 per cent of the biking population, claimed CAP.

Earlier this week, research conducted by New York University warned motorcyclists that foam used as padding in helmets may not often provide protection during high speed crashes.
