Motorbike thefts on rise in York

Motorbike insurance customers have been warned about the rising level of motorbike thefts that are taking place in York.

According to the local police force, more bikes are being stolen than cars in the city - despite the fact that there are far fewer motorcycles on the road.

New figures show that between October 2010 and September of this year, 77 motorbikes were stolen - compared to just 70 cars. An alarming number considering there are 16 times more cars on the roads than bikes.

Speaking to the York Press about the alarming trend of motorbike thefts in the region, Paddy Tyson, Motorcycle Action Group's campaigns manager said: "Cars are getting harder to steal."

This could explain why thieves in York are targeting bikes much more than they once were.

Recently, police in Yorkshire seized a cache of stolen motorbikes in Sheffield, Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham as part of Operation Maximise.
