Jet-powered motorbike to break speed record

A new jet-powered motorbike is being developed by scientists desperate to break the world land speed record for a two-wheeled vehicle.

The machine, which is likely to need a fairly comprehensive bike insurance policy, is expected to hit eye-watering speeds when it is taken out for a spin in March of next year.

Richard Brown, from Jet Reaction, which has designed the relatively light-weight engine, is no stranger to two-wheeled speed record attempts.

In 1999 he attempted to smash the record - currently held by Ack Attack Streamliner - on a customised jet bike on the Bonneville salt flats.

The new jet engine is a modified helicopter propulsion module that has been adapted to spray fuel into the exhaust of the bike.

Brown will attempt the land speed record in 2013 after extensive testing next year.

Recently, members of the European parliament voted to ban the customisation of road bikes on the continent - a move which has a far-reaching impact on motorcycle insurance customers.
